Turning onto the winding dirt road that led to the cabin, I glanced in my mirrors once again, making sure nobody was following me. I had been checking constantly the whole way to Big Bear Lake, going off route a few times, since I had time, ensuring I didn’t recognize any vehicles tailing me.

My nervous anxiety only increased when the cabin came into view. A completely different feeling than the first time I had come here. I pulled my car to a stop in front of the cabin, putting it into park. She was nowhere in sight. There was no other cars parked at the cabin. A panic set in. What if she got caught? What if something happened to her?

I stepped out of my car, making sure to grab my phone, looking around. Tessa appeared from around the back corner of the house, walking towards me, her belly protruding like she was smuggling a basketball.

“Hi,” she greeted me nervously with an awkward wave.

“Hi,” I gave my own awkward greeting.

“I…uh…thought we could go for a walk along one of the trails by the lake. I looked for the key where we used to hide the spare, but I guess Liam moved it…probably to keep me out,” she let out a humorless laugh.

I wasn’t sure how to respond to that. “A walk sounds nice…as long as you aren’t planning to murder me and bury me in the woods,” I teased, trying to ease the tension in the air.

She laughed with more humor this time. “Maybe I should be the one to worry about that, seeing the reason behind this meeting.”

“You have a point. Let’s just make a pact neither one of us plans to harm the other.”

“Deal.” She smiled a genuine smile. It was as infectious as her brother’s. “Ready?”

I glanced around our surroundings, wondering how she got here, then nodded, “I’ll follow you.”

She led the way to the trail as I checked my phone, cursing the low signal. As we strolled along the path, I couldn’t help staring at her belly from the side as she held a hand protectively over it while she walked.

“I know…I’m huge,” she said, causing me to move my eyes from her belly to her smiling face.

“No,” I shook my head. “Sorry. I don’t mean to stare. It’s just crazy. I mean Liam told me you were pregnant, I just for some reason was still picturing you the same as when I saw you last in the coffee shop.”

She nodded.

“How far are you?”

“Twenty-eight weeks.”

“Are you excited?”

“Yes,” she said with little enthusiasm.

“You don’t sound like it,” I called her out, then blushed, feeling ashamed. I didn’t know her. And I had no right to judge her, but unfortunately I was. “Sorry.”

She shook her head, her eyes meeting the ground, embarrassed herself. Or maybe it was shame. “I am excited to meet my baby…it’s just this whole situation isn’t exactly something I planned. I’ve wanted a family of my own for as long as I can remember. I just never thought I would be raising a child on my own.
